Ordinary greatcoats confer a +1 bonus to AC with no maximum dexterity bonus and no spell-failure chance. They can be worn over light armor, and their bonus stacks with armor (including mage armor). They cost 20gp and weigh 5lbs.
Reinforced or ‘Military’ greatcoats confer a +2 bonus to AC, with +6 maximum dex bonus and a 10% spell-failure chance. They can be worn over light armor, and their bonus stacks with armor (including mage armor). They cost 35gp. When worn over light armor it imposes a -1 armor check penalty. They weigh 10lbs. If the coat does not bear any insignia indicating its nature a DC 10 perception check is necessary to tell the difference between a reinforced and an ordinary greatcoat.
Armored greatcoats confer a +3 bonus to AC, with a +5 maximum dex bonus, a 15% spell-failure chance, and a -1 armor check penalty. They cannot be worn over light armor. They cost 75gp and weigh 15lbs. If the coat does not bear any insignia indicating its nature a DC 5 perception check is necessary to notice the coat’s armored panels.
All greatcoats can be donned in 1 round. Armored greatcoats require light armor proficiency, but ordinary and military greatcoats require no armor proficiency. Reinforced greatcoats may be made from wool or leather, but armored greatcoats are almost always made from leather with panels of boiled leather sewn into the lining.
