Samuel Marlowe might not be the first person you meet at the party, but he is certain to be remembered. Slight of frame and short for a human man at a mere 5 feet in height, he is attractive and friendly, quick with a smile and a joke. He is young, perhaps in his late twenties, yet his long, slicked back hair is flecked with specks of premature gray, when it is not concealed underneath a fashionable hat. Most of his life is public record- born in wealthy Hollen Moor, scion of a minor noble family, raised by an aged professor grandfather, graduated from University in the experimental new field of Applyyd Forensiks. A veritable polymath, his name has appeared on scholarly dissertations and newspaper editorials on diverse matters, but he is best known for his famed “Detective Agency”, through which he has serviced the rich and famous, as well as the poor and helpless. He has been credited with solving mysteries hinged upon the slightest detail, and bravely faced more than a few dangers in the pursuit of a caper. He is also notable for having almost singlehandedly kept several saloons in business, and has been the subject of more than a few rumors due to a gallivanting youth of excess. Nevertheless, his services are highly sought after as the man who vows to “Solve the Unsolvable”. Perhaps he can help you, too.
Appearance & Manner:
Marlowe is short. Quite short. This does not seem to deter his self confidence, nor the interest of the opposite sex. His dark blue eyes are calm and discerning, constantly flitting about taking in every detail of his surroundings. He is often wearing a stylish yet functional greatcoat, or a custom tailored dress coat complete with tails. His gray-speck’d black hair is slicked back, and spills out in the back from his omnipresent top hat (sometimes replaced by a bowler or fedora). He speaks with a highly cultured, occasionally raspy Moorlander accent, though he seems able to disguise this at will. He is a polyglot, speaking most all living languages in the Aetheria, and quite a few dead ones as well. Though friendly, he has a hard time keeping conversation to a topic that is not inherently interesting or intellectually engaging, and seems to struggle mightily against boredom. He can often be seen playing chess, against himself if no worthy opponent is present. His appetite for liquor, tobacco, and less legal substances becomes rapidly apparent whenever such items are available for consumption. This is perhaps surpassed only by his well documented weakness for women.
Straynge and Subtle Magicks
Marlowe is not a wizard, as he’ll be the first to tell you. To suggest so would be utterly ridiculous. Nor is he a Sorceror, a Witch, a Devil, or any other such nonsense. He is a Detektive, plain and simple. The only powers he needs are those of his mind and observation.
This is true, to be certain. However, it is undeniable that…_strange__ things have happened around him since he was a child. He often seems aloof, listening to sounds that aren’t there, or peering with intensity at some unknown pattern visible only to him. And he spends far too much time fiddling with that oversized pocketwatch that never leaves his person, even as he sleeps.
Where other Arcanists brashly display their powers, Marlowe’s magicks often take on a subtler tack. His incantations are mere whispers on the wind, coupled with a hurried scratching of a pen on parchment as he absentmindedly scribbles complex algorithms and arcane formulae. Occasionally, his spells manifest with a floral motif, though if this is a conscious effect or not is unknown.
